Postpartum Support - What can I do to best support my body postpartum?

At Lake Life Chiropractic, we have 10 tips to support your body through these postpartum changes:

  1. Get adjusted to support your nervous system. This re-connects your brain and body, balancing that “fight or flight” stress response and your “rest and digest” parasympathetic response for optimal healing. The key here is a neurologically-based chiropractor!

  2. Get adjusted to support your body’s physical changes. Your body is re-learning it’s center of gravity and taking on the physical demands of holding a new baby much of the day so it is an important time to make sure your body is in alignment!

  3. Nourish your body with warm, easy-to-digest foods. These include homemade soups, teas, bone broth and organic sprouted oatmeal.

  4. Keep nourishing your body with blood building, nutrient and collagen-rich foods including red meats, organ meats, fish, eggs, greens, beets, leafy greens, pumpkin seeds, avocado and citrus fruits. Continue your prenatal supplements!

  5. Warmth. Wrap up in a heated blanket or snuggle in with that fresh little one. This helps your womb heal and is good for relaxation. You can also enjoy a sitz bath each day with postpartum healing herbs from Farmhouse19 (available in our office). Bonus- add some of those brewed herbs to your peri bottle!

  6. Rest. Truly, this is the time to take off your supermom cape and stay in bed. Let the people around you help out with meals and household chores. Your job is to take care of yourself and your baby.

  7. Spend time outside (or near a window). Wrap your baby up close to your chest for bonding and fresh air. Bonus- this natural sunlight helps your baby establish circadian rhythms more quickly.

  8. Stay hydrated. Be sure to drink at least 10 glasses of water daily. Ten to 15 glasses for breastfeeding mamas!

  9. Prepare your “Farmacy.” Have herbs that are beneficial for combating mild postpartum anxiety and depression on hand.

  10. Placenta Encapsulation. The possible benefits of placenta encapsulation include: a decrease in postpartum mood disorders, increased production of oxytocin, a decrease in stress hormones, restoration of iron levels following bleeding after birth, and increased milk supply. Something to consider!
